Pregnancy and Chiropractic

Many pregnant women are taking advantage of chiropractic care to have healthy and comfortable pregnancies. Chiropractic is a great alternative way to stay healthy throughout your pregnancy and is a great addition to your regular prenatal care (midwife or obstetrician). There are many ways to take care of yourself during this transformative time and I am here to help you. Here are some ways chiropractic may help you have a more comfortable pregnancy.

Chiropractors are trained in working with pregnant women from the first trimester to the third, as well as postpartum. I have had great success working with pregnant women in each of these stages and I absolutely love helping mamas through this process.

Pregnant mamas are highly aware of their structural and physiological changes happening that are helping baby develop. Hormonal changes help your body prepare for birth, but they also make ligaments more lax, which can lead to joints feeling less stable. Pregnant women can experience joint pain as a result. Your ever growing beautiful belly will start to put strain on your lumbar curve, which can cause low back pain and an altered gait. Altered gait can lead to hip or sacroiliac (SI) joint pain and dysfunction. Chiropractic care can help you feel more comfortable and functional through these stages.

Chiropractic can also help ease nausea, which is a very common occurrence for pregnant mamas to experience mostly in the first trimester. Pregnant mamas can also experience headaches, and since it is not advised to take any medication during pregnancy it can be hard to suffer through them, especially if you get headaches frequently. With regular adjustments chiropractic is a natural and effective way to keep headaches under control.

Baby also benefits from mama getting adjusted. When mama gets adjusted it boosts her nervous system and allows it to function optimally. This helps bring more circulation and nutrition to baby. When mama’s pelvis gets adjusted, it promotes the best available space for baby to grow. It allows baby the room they need to move into the proper position for birth and helps avoid intrauterine constraint, which will lead to a healthy birth with minimal complications and interventions for both baby and mama.

Postpartum recovery can be tough on the body, too. Mama’s posture during nursing can create strain on the mid to upper back, which leads to pain and less mobility. Neck pain can also be a result of nursing posture due to mom looking down often to make sure baby is nursing properly. Healing for mom after birth can be assisted through adjustments and help the body return to pre pregnancy state.

You can relax knowing that chiropractic is safe and gentle for pregnant mamas. I modify my adjustments for each individual to make them feel comfortable and offer light force techniques. We have tables that accommodate a growing belly and allow mom to relax facedown with the support of pregnancy pillows. Most moms rave about being able to lie facedown at their appointments.

As you can see there are many benefits to chiropractic care during pregnancy, I hope you will call to schedule and that you will experience the benefits too. I’d be happy to answer any questions you may have. Find me at www.hamiltonchiros.com.
